Fifth grade students at Daniel Street Elementary School in Laura Colosa’s class recently received a virtual visit from Dr. Joseph Dituri, who is a bio-medical engineer, retired naval commander, college professor and a leader in clinical research, as well as a dad and a Lindenhurst graduate.

Dr. Dituri is attempting a world record by living underwater for 100 days, and his goal is to inspire others to become involved in STEAM and encourage a new generation of scientists. During his time in the underwater habitat located in the Florida Keys, Dr. Dituri is conducting extensive research to identify potential cures for medical issues impacting society today.

Through the virtual meeting with the esteemed scientist, students could ask questions to learn more about his experience in the underwater habitat, his path to becoming a scientist and his time as a student in Lindenhurst schools.

“I jumped on the chance for this former ‘Lindy Kid’ to speak to our current ‘Lindy Kids’ to show them that they can grow up to do big, important things, too,” Mrs. Colosa said about the experience.
